Secreted Desires: The Major Uranians:
Hopkins, Pater and Wilde
This volume demarcates the distinctly paederastic elements
within a series of highly nuanced, Uranian texts.  In the face of
stringent opposition, these Uranians and their literary and
aesthetic works established an eccentric positionality worthy of
consideration — to further our understanding of Victorian
sexuality and culture.  Chapter one considers recent engagements
of Gerard Manley Hopkins’s eroticism; chapter two considers
Hopkins’s unique problematics; chapter three is a close reading of
Hopkins’s ‘Epithalamion’; chapter four considers the paederastic
pedagogy advocated by Walter Pater in
Marius the Epicurean;
chapter five considers the breach between Pater and Oscar Wilde
facilitated by Pater’s review of
The Picture of Dorian Gray.  The
conclusion considers the Uranian continuum stretching from
William Johnson to Guy Davenport.

Svazek vymezuje pederastické prvky zřetelné v řadě vysoce
nuancovaných uranistických textů. Uranisté navzdory silnému
odporu společnosti svým literárním a estetickým dílem vytvořili
výstřední pozici, jež zasluhuje pozornost vedoucí k prohloubení
našeho pochopení viktoriánské sexuality a kultury. První
kapitola se zabývá současným zkoumáním erotismu Gerarda
Manley Hopkinse; druhá kapitola se věnuje jedinečné
problematice Hopkinse; třetí kapitola je důsledným čtením
Hopkinsovy básně „Epithalamion“; čtvrtá kapitola zkoumá
pederastickou pedagogiku, jak ji prosazoval Walter Pater v
románu „Marius the Epicurean“; patá kapitola se zabývá
roztržkou mezi Paterem a Oscarem Wildem, k níž napomohla
Paterova recenze Wildeova románu „Obraz Doriana Graye“. V
závěru se kniha zabývá kontinuem uranistické tvorby, jež sahá
od Williama Johnsona po Guye Davenporta.
